Boys Are a Side Dish

The other day I received and e-mail from a recently divorced woman in her early '40's who wanted my advice on dressing to attract men. Now, as depressing as this was, it was no match for the similar question I got from the 18 year-old who wanted to 'dress sexy to attract the guys at the car dealership where I work as a receptionist'.

I wanted to scream! At both of them.

Since I'm looking at forty on my next birthday, and I'm soon to re-enter the world of single women, the spectre of dating has begun to emerge. It's been almost a decade since I actively sought out dates...and even then dating was just too wierd for words. Which brings me to the best advice I have ever had when it comes to romance: boys are a side dish.

You are better off investing the majority of your energy -- both physical and emotional -- in the things that are certain to benefit you: great friends, a satisfying career, healthy family ties, your spiritual growth. These are the areas that always pay back dividends. Men...not as much.

Yes, I do know some women whose significant other has brought them great joy and fulfillment. In every single case, though, they also have an interesting life and high self-esteem independent of the spouse/partner.

So hear this divas...and this applies to me too...boys are a side dish, they are the icing on the cake, they are the olive in the martini. We don't have to have them to be complete...but they are a nice add-on to an already groovy life. Now let's all go out and practice this together!

And to the two ladies who wrote in, dress to be elegant instead of in-your-face-sexy. (Heaven knows, we don't need more tawdry, belly-baring, thong-creeping, desperate women roaming the streets.) Wear the clothes that please you and make you look pretty to your own eyes. The joyful being you unleash by being true and good to yourself will be enough in itself to attract men -- and I'm thinking that the caliber of men you attract might improve, too.
